Handy Bintan Golf Holidays FAQs
These questions and answers were created using the most common questions travellers ask in the travel forums.
Public Transport
Public transport on Bintan Island is very limited, especially outside the main towns like Tanjung Pinang. Most visitors rely on resort shuttle buses, private drivers, or taxis arranged through hotels. Ride-hailing apps are not as widely used as in Bali. Courtesy such as letting others exit first is appreciated, particularly in resorts and ferry terminals.
Walking
Walking is generally easy within resort areas like Lagoi Bay, where paths are well maintained. However, outside resorts, footpaths can be uneven or nonexistent, and roads may not be pedestrian-friendly. Always stay alert for traffic and walk on the side of the road when needed.
Driving
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Traffic is generally lighter than Bali, but can still be unpredictable in towns. Visitors are not encouraged to rent scooters or cars unless experienced and properly licensed. Helmets are mandatory on motorbikes. Most travellers find hiring a driver through their resort far easier and safer.
Language
Bahasa Indonesia is the official language. In tourist areas such as Lagoi and major resorts, English is widely spoken. In local towns like Tanjung Pinang, English is less common, so simple phrases or translation apps can be helpful.
Prices & Tax
Prices in resorts and tourist areas are usually quoted in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and often include tax. However, many hotels and restaurants add a 10–21% service charge and government tax, so check menus and bills carefully.
Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory, but is appreciated for good service. In resorts and restaurants, a small tip or rounding up the bill is common. For private drivers or guides, tipping is more customary.
Drinking
The legal drinking age is 21. Alcohol is available mainly in resorts, beach clubs, and hotel bars. Outside these areas, options can be limited. Prices are higher than mainland Indonesia due to Bintan’s resort-focused tourism.
