Golf Holidays In Sri Lanka | Golf Packages & Tours

Sri Lanka is one of the most distinctive and atmospheric golf destinations in the world, where colonial-era courses meet tropical landscapes, ancient culture, and extraordinary biodiversity. Often described as a microcontinent, Sri Lanka offers a remarkable diversity of experiences within a relatively small island, making it ideal for immersive golf journeys that go far beyond the fairways.

Sri Lanka’s climate is tropical, but golf is made comfortable by altitude and seasonal variations. Highland regions such as Nuwara Eliya enjoy cooler temperatures year-round, making them ideal for golf even during warmer months. Coastal areas offer warm conditions balanced by ocean breezes. Golf travel is best planned around the island’s monsoon patterns, with year-round play possible by selecting the right regions at the right time.

While Sri Lanka has a limited number of golf courses compared to larger golf nations, the quality and uniqueness of the experience more than compensate. Courses are uncrowded, serene, and often steeped in history, providing a sense of stepping back in time. The focus is on enjoyment and atmosphere rather than competition, making Sri Lanka perfect for relaxed, experiential golf travel.

What truly elevates Sri Lanka as a golf destination is the richness of the surrounding experience. Golfers can combine rounds with wildlife safaris, tea plantation tours, ancient temples, golden beaches, and world-class cuisine. Few destinations allow you to play golf in the morning and encounter elephants, explore UNESCO heritage sites, or relax on tropical beaches later the same day.

Sri Lanka appeals to golfers seeking cultural depth, natural beauty, and a sense of discovery. It is not a mass-market golf destination, but rather a curated experience for travellers who value storytelling, authenticity, and unforgettable moments.

Handy Sri Lanka Golf Holidays FAQs

These questions and answers were created using the most common questions travellers ask in the travel forums.

Public Transport
Public transport includes buses and trains, which are widely used and inexpensive. Trains are especially popular for scenic journeys between major destinations such as Colombo, Kandy, and Ella. Buses can be crowded and lively. Offering seats to elderly passengers, monks, and pregnant women is considered respectful.

Walking
Walking conditions vary depending on the area. Footpaths can be uneven or sometimes absent, particularly outside city centres. Pedestrians should stay alert as traffic can be busy and vehicles may not always give way.

Driving
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Traffic can be chaotic, especially in larger cities, with buses, tuk-tuks, motorcycles, and pedestrians sharing the road. Many visitors prefer hiring a driver or using taxis or tuk-tuks rather than driving themselves.

Language
The official languages are Sinhala and Tamil, while English is widely spoken in tourism areas, hotels, and businesses.

Prices & Tax
Prices often include VAT (15%), and restaurants and hotels may add a 10% service charge to the bill.

Tipping
Tipping is appreciated and fairly common. In restaurants, leaving 5–10% is typical if a service charge is not already included. Small tips are also common for hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Drinking
The legal drinking age is 21. Alcohol is available in licensed bars, hotels, and liquor stores, though it may not always be served in smaller local restaurants.
